[SUSTAINABILITY] Protecting the forests

One of the ways to fight against the causes and consequences of climate change is the use of satellite
imaging in real-time for monitoring deforestation. This data is used to document the devastating impact
of deforestation on biodiversity and local communities, as well as to assess which areas will be placed
under special environmental measures.
Global Forest Watch, a platform launched by the World Resources Institute, uses satellite imaging and
other data sources to monitor forests around the world and provide warnings when deforestation is
detected. A report published in the journal Science Advances in 2020 showed that Global Forest Watch
platforms and other forest monitoring technologies contributed to reducing the rate of deforestation in
tropical areas by approximately 18% between 2001 and 2019. However, it is clear that other factors also
contributed to this trend, including political decisions, the economic situation and social movements.
